A True Wonder for the Senses at
Jardim Botanico Sao Paulo
The Jardim Botanico Sao Paulo is an incredible wonder for the senses – with 143 hectares of green space, there are more plants and colors here than you could ever possibly imagine seeing in one place together! The botanical garden in Sao Paulo is simply a must-see – your trip to the city wouldn’t be complete with out it!
The Jardim Botanico Sao Paulo is actually situated inside of a state park reserve area, called the State Park Sources of the Ipiranga, which is a vast area full of natural resources and a large water supply. The gardens were conceptualized as early as 1938, when the Department of Botany in Sao Paulo was developed, and it was in 1969 that the gardens became a formalized tourist attraction in the area.
In the interior of the gardens, there are several major greenhouses which contain plants from Atlantic forests, with one of the greenhouses serving as a spot for temporary exhibitions. The Institute of Botany is also located on the premises, and it houses approximately 6,400 books about nature and botanical gardens. In order to better understand the surrounding beauty, the gardens are also home to a Botanical Museum, where visitors can see many samples of Brazilian flora and the various natural products that can come from their use.
As you walk along the trails and take in the sights at the Jardim Botanico Sao Paulo, there are several tours available with guides, which will help you to better understand what it is you’re seeing as you walk around. A new trail was opened in 2006 that showcases what an area of recovering forest looks like, and the trail itself was constructed to ensure that human presence would not have a negative impact on the surroundings. The trail is built out of eucalyptus wood raised 4 meters off the ground – not only does this protect the soil, but visitors have a better view of the forest canopy and may catch a glimpse of some birds and animals!
The Jardim Botanico Sao Paulo is open from Wednesday to Sunday year-round, with most tours taking 30-40 minutes. Other attractions along the botanical gardens are the Avenue Von Martius, which is lined with palm trees, and an historical gate from 1894. There is also a bamboo tunnel that is sure to delight children!
Plenty of animals hide amidst the foliage, so be sure to keep your eyes open as you stroll around – monkeys, opossums, toucans and other South American birds, and plenty of other shy but curious creatures inhabit this area. You never know who or what you might catch a glimpse of!
