Energize Yourself at the Maratona Internacional de Sao Paulo

The Maratona Internacional de Sao Paulo is a reminder that the people of Brazil are extremely gifted when it comes to the sport of running – and it is a passion that they’ve always tried to share with the world! For the past 11 years, the Sao Paulo Internacional Marathon has attracted the best racers and long-distance runners from around the world, all competing to win first place in this challenging and energizing marathon event.

Always held in the first half of the year – though the specific month and time varies – the Maratona Internactional de Sao Paulo is an event that attracts over 12,000 runners and is open to both men and women. Considering that there are twelve thousand people running through the streets, you can only imagine how many spectators attend this day-long event – it’s certainly not an easy day to get around the city, but who wants to work on Marathon day? Most of the streets are closed off for the runners – the course runs right through the city, which is what makes it extremely challenging – and therefore regular business hours tend to be modified when the event is held.

The course of the marathon is just over 42 kilometers, and the departure point varies each year. The most recent event left from the Ibirapuera Obeslisco, and previous years have seen beginning stages at places like the Monumento as Bandeiras, the Tunel Janio Quadros, and Cicade Universitaria. While all these areas are usually passed on the route, it gives runners a better experience to begin at different points each year – it changes the race up a bit each time.

Crowd participation is a very important aspect of the Maratona Internacional de Sao Paulo, and since the race is held in the streets of the city – you can watch the runners pass by for free! Of course, it’s always nice to get a prime spot at one of the better viewing locations along the route, but only the most dedicated racing enthusiasts tend to snatch these up, sometimes claiming their spots the night before the race even begins! The runners greatly enjoy the encouragement they get from the crowds however, and so everyone is encouraged themselves to come out and join the festivities if they’re able.

Athletes who want to participate in the Maratona Internactional de Sao Paulo must be at least 18 years of age, and in proven good physical condition. A younger athlete must have written permission by his or her parents or guardians. There is a small entry fee for participation, in order to cover the cost of the event, however the prizes more than make up for it if you win first, second, or third place!

Whether you’re watching or participating, the Sao Paulo International Marathon is a great opportunity to connect with the Sao Paulo community.
