Dali, Picasso and More at the Museum de Arte de Sao Paulo!

If you’ve ever wanted to see some of the most famous works of art in one place, the Museum de Arte de Sao Paulo is the place to visit – the museum opened to the public in October 1947, and quickly amassed works from some of the best-known painters and artists of all time. It currently houses the most representative collection of western art in all of Latin America, including paintings by such names as: Picasso, Salvador Dali, Van Gogh, Renoir, Debret, and Modigliani.

Even sculpture here includes an extremely rare Renoir, as well as many works by Degas and Rodin. Incredibly, the museum continues to operate as a non-profit organization, and has become internationally recognized for its role in the preservation and awareness of historic and contemporary art – not to mention the unbelievable diversity and high quality of the MASP collection! In all of the Southern hemisphere, there is simply no museum that can match the importance of the collection found in the Sao Paulo Art Museum.

Adding to the European works of art from the 13th century onward, the Museum de Arte de Sao Paulo also houses a significant amount of Brazilian art from the 17th century until today. On a smaller scale, but no less important, are non-Western collections such as the galleries of Asian and African art, including archaeologically important groups of artifacts like Egyptian, Roman, Greek, and Etruscan antiquities. There are some pieces of pre-Columbian art, as well as a small room of works from Medieval Europe.

In total, there are approximately 8,000 works, housed in a 10,000 square meter space, which includes – aside from the temporary and permanent galleries – a library, film gallery, photo gallery, two auditoriums and several restoration workshops, administration offices, technical reserve rooms, a gift store, and an on-site restaurant. There is also an enormous open-air courtyard in the middle of the Museum de Arte de Sao Paulo, where concerts are often held and a weekly antiques market and showcase is hosted every Sunday!

The Museum de Arte de Sao Paulo is open from 11am to 8pm from throughout the week, with shortened hours until 6pm on Sundays and holidays. Students can gain admission at half price, and on Tuesdays, children under 10 years of age and seniors can visit the museum for free! The unbelievable diversity of the collection here, as well as its placement inside a well-structured and highly unique building, make the Sao Paulo Museum of Arts a stop that is definitely not to be missed when visiting the city – however, you may need to set aside an entire day to get through it all, as there is simply so much to see… and you won’t want to rush through.
