Spend a Whole Weekend at Parque do Ibirapuera – You’ll Need It!

Sao Paulo’s Parque do Ibirapuera has been compared to New York City’s Central Park – it is such a large park, with such a centralized location, that its importance to the city and its people has taken on enormous significance. Not only are tourists and visitors encouraged to spend as much time at Ibirapuera Park as possible, but locals spend just as much or more time there on a regular basis – doing everything from enjoying the free concerts to taking a daily jog!

The inaugural date for the Parque do Ibirapuera was in 1954, in order to commemorate the city’s 400th anniversary. The park was created with many buildings designed by the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer, who also worked together with landscape artist and designer Roberto Burle Marx to develop an area covering a total of nearly two square kilometers in the middle of the city!

As the second largest park in the city – with free admission – there is easy access to many surrounding attractions, though the park hosts plenty of its own events. There are some lazy lagoons where you could jog the trails or walk along enjoying the sights, or you could rent a bicycle and travel around the whole park quickly! Each Sunday morning, the Parque do Ibirapuera also holds a free outdoor concert in the Praca da Paz area. After the concert, you might be inclined to take in the Bosque de Leitura, which is essentially a free outdoor library where you can borrow books or magazines to read while you’re in the park during that day!

Around the edges of Sao Paulo’s Ibirapuera Park, you can easily gain entrance to the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art as well as the Museo Afro Brasil. Don’t forget to stop in at the Lucas Nogueira Garcez Pavilion, also referred to as the ‘OCA’, which looks like a flying saucer building! In here, you can enjoy traveling art exhibits that change with frequency – so there’s always something new to take in.

The Parque do Ibirapuera’s gates are opened from 5am to midnight each day, and it is not recommended that visitors stray into the park after closing hours, just for the sake of personal safety. The main street that runs past that park is Avenida Pedro Alvares Cabral, although the park can be easily reached from anywhere in the city – any local can point you in the direction to go, and you’ll inevitably reach it! For example, if you’re taking a cab from Avenida Paulista, it should take approximately 10 minutes to reach the front gates.
