Join the Party at Sao Paulo
Anniversary Celebrations!
Every year on January 25th, the city of Sao Paulo has Sao Paulo anniversary celebrations that are definitely a sight to see. It’s not to be missed – the city is decorated for a giant party, people get time off work, children don’t have to go to school, and best of all, there’s an enormous cake that just gets bigger each and every year! It’s an absolute sight to behold, and you have to see it to believe it.
Sao Paulo was founded in 1554 by Jesuit missionaries, and since that time, the people of Sao Paulo have continued to remain proud of their heritage and their humble beginnings in the Brazilian wilderness. Now, at over 450 years strong and with a diversity that is nearly unmatched anywhere else in the world, the Sao Paulo anniversary celebration is something to be taken seriously. It’s a birthday party, a time when the city comes together to remember who they are and where they came from – and to listen to some great music.
Each year, there are musical performances scheduled by local and nationally famous bands and singers, and there are several venues chosen for these performances. Tickets are reasonably priced so that everyone can enjoy the celebration, and sometimes even local companies get in on the fun – one year, mobile phone companies gave everyone the chance to make a free call to the Sao Paulo City Hall to wish the city a happy birthday! Not only that, but many stores offer excellent shopping discounts for the city’s birthday week.
Perhaps what the Sao Paulo anniversary date is best known for, however, is its record-breaking cakes. In fact, each January 25th at 11am, free cake is served to every person who visits a cake shop called Bixiga – and as it turns out, Bixiga makes the most famous cakes in the whole country. In 1985, Armando Puglisi, the owner of the cake shop, made a cake that was 1800 meters long! And it was this cake that actually made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest cake in the world.
But it doesn’t stop there, because each year, the cake is still huge! Although the record hasn’t been broken again, residents of the neighborhood that the cake shop is in help put together the annual Sao Paulo anniversary cake, which adds a meter for every year since the city’s foundation – and because that’s an awful lot of cake, anyone who heads down to Bixiga at 11am on the birthday morning is given some cake for free! That’s over 450 meters of cake, every year!
Since event details can change according to the year’s celebrations – though the cake is always a sure thing – it’s a good idea to check the city of Sao Paulo’s website before coming to Sao Paulo for the celebrations. You’ve never experienced a birthday party like this one before!
