Get the Hottest Trends First at
Sao Paulo Fashion Week

One of the highlights of the global fashion industry runs right here in Brazil – Sao Paulo Fashion Week is the time when designers, fashionistas, models, and anyone who’s anyone in the industry drops what they’re doing and heads down to Sao Paulo for a week of clothing, designs, trends, and some of best media coverage that money can’t buy. As the Latin American equivalent of Europe’s fashion industry, Sao Paulo is the headquarters for all things Haute Couture – with a little bit of a Brazilian twist.

While the main idea of Sao Paulo Fashion Week is to highlight Brazilian fashion and its internationally famous labels like Iodice, Forum, and Zoomp on the catwalk, there are approximately 50 catwalk shows throughout the week with both Brazilian and some international labels displaying their newest wares. What helps this along is the recent trend of Brazilian models hitting the international modeling scene – everyone wants to see them and what they’ll be wearing at this prestigious event.

Running in either the middle or end of January and then again in July, SPFW is typically held inside the Biennial building in Ibirapuera Park. In 2007, the event was centered around the theme of ecological awareness, with over 50 designers incorporating environmental themes into their collections – the issues highlighted through their designs were things like water conservation, alternative energy, and recycling. The idea was to help the Sao Paulo Fashion Week fall into a more Brazilian identity, and through these ecological designs, the question of natural and cultural biodiversity was brought to light.

And what better event to be a part of than one which gives back to the environment? Organizers dedicated themselves to planting 7,800 trees after fashion week ended, in order to compensate for all the carbon dioxide emissions that resulted from the week’s activities and increased travel in the city.

Some of the famous models that visitors to Sao Paulo Fashion Week will catch a glimpse of are: Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Gisele Bundchen, Izabel Goulart, and Ana Hickman, and it isn’t unusual for a designer or agency to catch a face of some new, fresh talent to skyrocket into supermodel stardom when the fashion week is over. International editors come here to get exclusive magazine coverage, and visitors come for the incredible clothes and designs – if you want to see and be seen on the Brazilian fashion scene, Sao Paulo Fashion Week is definitely the place to be!
