Be Welcomed at Catholic Sao Paulo Igreija de Sao Francisco de Assis

A visit to Sao Paulo’s religious buildings wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Sao Paulo Igreija de Sao Francisco de Assis. Built between 1647 and 1790, the church is actually two churches together that share a common name, though each is run for a different section of the people: one church is run by the Catholic clergy, while the other is run strictly by laypeople. It stands as a testament to Sao Paulo’s colonial heritage, and is one of the best-preserved Portuguese buildings from the colonial period in the city.

This church is fairly near to the Cathedral de Se, and the current priest of the Catholic side is Rev. Devair Carlos Poletto. The church’s historical position in the city has made it an excellent location for frequent religious conferences; for example in 2003, it was host to a National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, where the mission and ministry of the church was redefined over the course of a week.

The Sao Paulo Igreija de Sao Francisco de Assis takes its work within the city very seriously, and it is not unusual for church members to hold food drives or money collection to help feed the poor. While there is no charge to visit the church as well, donations are willingly accepted and go toward restoration work on the church, the living expenses for the priest, and ministries in helping to feed the less fortunate in the city.

Contrary to many other churches in the city that were established by the Jesuits in Sao Paulo, the Sao Paulo Igreija de Sao Francisco de Assis was founded and built up by the Franciscan order of monks upon their arrival in the area. The church is still associated with the Franciscan order, however all Catholics are welcome to visit the church, attend mass, and experience the sights of a church whose history dates back several centuries.

The Sao Paulo Igreiha de Sao Francisco de Assis is free to visit, and is open to the public daily from 7:30am until 7pm. However, it would be wise to phone the church ahead of your visit, as many Catholic churches have differently scheduled mass and confessional times, during which the church is closed to the public so as to not disturb worshippers. The phone number for the Sao Francisco de Assis church Sao Paulo is (11)3106-0081, and if you are traveling there by cab or on foot, the address of the location is Largo Sao Francisco 133.
