Find Culinary Delights at the Sao Paulo Mercado Municipal Paulistano!

The Sao Paulo Mercado Municipal Paulistano was opened in 1932, the culmination of a four year project that was designed to create a neo-classical building of over 22 thousand meters squared, full of gorgeous stained glass windows, where people from all over the city could come and trade with each other, buying the goods they needed at decent prices.

Today, the market in Sao Paulo is a vibrant location with national appeal, carrying everything from food to general goods – and you can almost always find what you’re looking for with little effort! One step inside the Sao Paulo Mercado Municipal Paulistano, and this is what you’ll find: legumes, vegetables, fruit, chocolates, meat, fish, sausages, seafood, poultry, spices, wines, cheeses, condiments, breads, and any other flavors and colors you can think of! Take a moment to sample some of the delicious local offerings, or even purchase some pre-cooked foods and have a locally-inspired meal right there at the market!

The fact is, not only will you be experiencing the delicious flavors of Brazilian cuisine, but you’ll also be situated right in the midst of some important Sao Paulo history. Before the market building was finally utilized as the official Sao Paulo Mercado Municipal Paulistano complex, during its building process it served as the headquarters for the 1932 Revolution. The architect who worked on the building is also famous for his contributions to Sao Paulo – Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo – and his buildings are often studied closely by both students of architecture and historians alike.

If you’re looking to make a stop at the market in Sao Paulo for a snack or light lunch, try one of the famous fried codfish pockets or bologna sandwiches, which never fail to delight! Exotic Brazilian fruits also make a tasty and healthy treat, while giant mortadella sandwiches on French bread might fill you up enough to serve as both lunch and dinner! Don’t be surprised if you spend less than $5 on food and a drink – the market is very affordable, which has allowed it to continue being such a success for nearly a century.

The market also has wide hours so that you can make a stop whenever it’s most convenient for you: it’s open from 7am to 6pm on Monday through Saturday, with reduced hours on Sunday until 1pm. There are over 1000 workers at the Sao Paulo Mercado Municipal Paulistano on any given day, with around 315 kiosks to serve you. With around 350 tons of food sold daily, and visits by more than 10,000 customers each day during the week – doubling the number on Saturday – this is one place you definitely don’t want to miss out on while visiting Sao Paulo… not to mention that the market’s food is some of the best tasting and most affordable in town!
