Learn City History at Sao Paulo Museum Acervo do Palacio dos Bandeirantes!

Originally, the Sao Paulo Museum Acervo do Palacio dos Bandeirantes was constructed for the purpose of housing the University’s “Foundation Conde Francisco Matarazzo”, however after construction began in 1955, financial issues began to slow the work. It was in 1964 that the Foundation began negotiating with the Sao Paulo state government, and sure enough, the Palacio soon passed into the hands of the government for their seat headquarters. But in order to work together with the Foundation, the state also agreed to house an art collection!

Although few people who visit the city are aware of it – which makes visiting the Museum a nice, quiet break from the rest of the city’s busyness – the Sao Paulo Museum Acervo do Palacio dos Bandeirantes has a large and very rich artistic collection of approximately 1,700 pieces. Neoclassical painters’ works are featured here, including such names as Oscar Pereira da Silva, Almeida Jr., Pedro Americo and more, lined along the palace walls. Experience the changes of centuries in the Hall of Dishes, and if you should like to see who has had the privilege of taking care of the state in years past, take a walk down the Baroque Hall or the Gallery of Governors.

The name of the palace, which also became the name of the museum, is a tribute to the Bandeirantes pioneers who expanded Brazil’s borders many centuries ago. The people of Sao Paulo are very grateful to these early explorers, since their heritage lies directly in their work and willingness to tame the land here. As a result, all of the items inside the Sao Paulo Museum Acervo do Palacio dos Bandeirantes are very well marked and described – you might learn more about the leadership of the state here than you’d find in a history book! You’ll learn biographical information about past leaders, and truly gain a sense of the pride that the Brazilian people take in their leadership and their country.

When planning to visit the Sao Paulo Museum Acervo do Palacio dos Bandeirantes, be sure to schedule time during the weekend – the Museum is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm until 5pm, though you may frequently see school tour groups in their buses heading up to the palace during the weekdays. The location is at Avenida Morumbi 4500, and you may call the museum at (11)2193-8000 for more information. Of course, if you’re in the city on business and you would like to organize a little excursion for your business group, the museum would be more than happy to accommodate! For scheduled tours, please call the museum at (11)2193-8282, and keep in mind that scheduled tours are typically held at 10am and 3pm.
