Poetry in Motion at Sao Paulo Museum Casa Guilherme de Almeida
The Sao Paulo Museum Casa Guilherme de Almeida is devoted to the life and writings of the Brazilian poet Guilherme de Almeida, who was born in Campinas on July 24th, 1890, and died in Sao Paulo on July 11th, 1969. This man was famous for his contribution to writing, however he did much more than that throughout his lifetime – he was also known for his work as a lawyer, a translator, being an essayist, and a journalist. He also helped to popularize some Japanese forms of poetry, such as the haiku!
Throughout his life, he was married to Belkis Borrozo, and they had a son together whose name was a bit of a mouthful: Guy Sergio Haroldo Stephen Zozimo Borrozo de Almeida. You can certainly tell he was a writer’s son – there are so many words! Either way, Guilherme de Almeida’s contribution to Brazilian poetry and writing has never been forgotten, even to the point where each year in Campinas, the city holds a Guilherme de Almeida Week in honor of his memory. This week is full of readings from his work, displays of his poetry and writing, and of course, visits to the Sao Paulo Museum Casa Guilherme de Almeida.
The Sao Paulo Museum Casa Guilherme de Almeida is actually the house of the poet – this is where he made his residence for over 20 years! The museum’s contents are focused on his biographical information and his literary contribution, and contain many things that give a bit of insight into the poet’s mysterious personality. There are both permanent and temporary exhibitions of his work such as manuscripts and personal documents, his book library, his photographic archive, and even some erotic pieces of writing that were certainly not meant for anyone else to see during his lifetime.
Guilherme de Almeida also had a beautiful collection of furniture, sculpture, porcelain, and paintings, and instead of distributing them throughout museums, they have all been kept in place inside his home. In fact, the Sao Paulo Museum Casa Guilherme de Almeida is unique in the sense that it is the only biographical museum that is associated with the Sao Paulo Department of Museums and Archives division – that is a testament to the influence this poet had on Brazil’s history. His book of poetry called ‘We’ that was published in 1917 was perhaps the most inspirational of all his writings, as it was a collection of romantic pieces that could have been directed at either men or women, which made his work groundbreaking. He is still considered today to have been one of the greatest poets to ever have lived in Brazilian history.
