Cultural Enlightenment at the Sao Paulo Museum Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil

Housed in a Neo-Classical building from 1901, the Sao Paulo Museum Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil is a popular and well known destination for tourists and locals alike, at all times of the year! The cultural center here was inaugurated in April of 2001, for the purpose of helping to springboard the creative vitality of the downtown Sao Paulo art scene. Since the building is located directly in the historical heart of the city, it is a recognized destination by pedestrians and visitors alike.

The building was purchased in 1923 by the Bank of Brazil, in order to become the first official Brazilian bank, located within Sao Paulo’s capital. After many years of use as the bank, the bank eventually decided that it needed a better location but would utilize this building and its recognized status as a beneficial service for the surrounding city – and thus, the Bank of Brazil’s headquarters became the Sao Paulo Museum Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil. Many areas of the building were remodeled, but the main idea was to keep the style and appearance that had allowed the building to become such a landmark in the first place.

Now, with over 4000 square meters of space, the Sao Paulo Museum Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil has everything from exhibition halls and auditoriums to a cinema, a stage theatre, a video room, café, gift shop, and restaurant. This array of options at the CCBB Sao Paulo allows the center to offer many different things to the people of the city in terms of arts and culture. Each year brings a new slate of cultural programming, ranging in areas from music, cinema, literature, dance performances, educational programs and theatre productions, to international gallery exhibits of all different varieties of art.

In fact, one of the things that continues to drive the cultural center forward is its refusal to remain a ‘static’ museum. By featuring both live performances and gallery showings, there is something there for everyone to enjoy – and with a location right in the heart of the city, the CCBB Sao Paulo can easily each out to the entire city, every day. Of course, since there are so many things to see and do here, there are different hours for each gallery and performance. In order to ensure that you don’t miss a performance or that you are able to visit the galleries when they’re open, please call (11)3113-3651/3652 for more information. Otherwise, the Sao Paulo Museum Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil is generally open from 9am until 8pm during the week, and the official address is Rua Alvares Penteado 112, Centro. Entrance rates will also vary, according to what it is you wish to see while you’re visiting.
