Grand Exhibits at the Sao Paulo
Museum de arte brasileira

The majestic building of the Sao Paulo Museum de arte brasileira may be enough to scare off shy art lovers, but don’t be dissuaded – this museum in the quiet Higienopolis area is open to everyone! And the name is a bit misleading as well, since this isn’t just a museum for Brazilian art – instead, there are ever-changing international exhibits of the highest caliber! In fact, each time there is a new exhibit going on display, both the wings of the museum are completely transformed to reflect what is going to be shown. Naturally, it isn’t hard to see why this is one of the most well-cared for and pricier museums to visit.

Alongside the international exhibits, the Sao Paulo Museum de arte brasileira houses over 3000 works of Brazilian art, including paintings, engravings, drawings and sculptures from artists such as Portinari and Di Cavalcanti. However, it is the dynamic international showings in which the museum truly takes its pride, and you never quite know what may show up next – there have been things in the past as varied as computer exhibits to holograms, miniatures, video displays, light and sound shows, set designs, theatrical recreations, and on one occasion, there was a variety of items that used to belong to Napoleon Bonaparte!

The Napoleon exhibit included a replica of his imperial cloak as well as his real hat, many paintings and notebooks, documents and maps that he used, some letters such as a love letter he once wrote, and even tickets for things like train trips! Other exhibitions have included Egyptian ancient art pieces from the Pharaonic period, Chinese imperial and contemporary art, and a display of Brazilian caricatures collected from the past 200 years in media history.

The Sao Paulo Museum de arte brasileira had its 40th anniversary in 2001, and since then, the displays have grown even larger and more elaborate – and sometimes a bit more obscure, such as the sound and light displays. Since 1965, the museum has also held an annual art show to display what has been created in the School of Visual Arts that is directly associated with the museum – the school employs many well known artists in its faculty, and its mission is to help train and grow new generations of visual artists, and there are many scholarships which less fortunate students may apply for so that they do not have to give up on their dream.

When visiting Sao Paulo, the Sao Paulo Museum de arte brasileira is certainly not a sight to be missed – with such diverse and unique art displays, it is certainly a museum that you’ll be talking about for years to come. It is open from Tuesday through Friday between 10am and 9pm, and on the weekends there are reduced hours until 6pm.
