Enjoy A New Perspective at the Sao Paulo Museum de Arte Contemporanea

The Sao Paulo Museum de Arte Contemporanea, also referred to as the MAC, was founded in 1963 as a part of the Universidade de Sao Paulo, after the university was given the holdings of the Museum of Modern Art of Sao Paulo from its president, Mr. Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho. This was done in order for the Museum of Modern Art to retain its title as a purveyor of ‘modern’ pieces, however the artwork that had previously been in that museum needed a new home. Thus the Sao Paulo Museum de Arte Contemporanea was established!

These donations constituted the majority of the initial collection for the MAC, and this collection was enhanced by the donations of additional individuals within the city – including the private collection of Mr. Matarazzo and his wife! The Nelson Rockefeller Foundation also made substantial contributions, and the efforts of the new museum were awarded the Bienais Internacionais de Sao Paulo prize, which helped to procure even further additions.

The establishment of this museum was the first specialized collection of art from the 20th century in all of Latin America, carving out a niche for this type of art from then onward. Today, the collection of the Sao Paulo Museum de Arte Contemporanea rests at approximately 8,000 objects, including everything from painting to drawings, photography, prints, engravings, concept art and sculptures, to other pieces with national influence and design. Artists included in the collection range from internationally famous artists like Picasso, Modigliani, and Boccioni, to others such as Brecheret, Tarsila, Portinari, and Malfatti.

The museum is located right on the main campus of the Universidade de Sao Paulo, which also offers students courses in contemporary and modern art – as a result, the museum is extremely well kept, since it is both a public museum and an educational tool. The MAC also frequently invites temporary exhibitions to display works from both Brazilian and international artists, and guided tours are available for visitors who wish to learn more about the art than what is simply written on the placards.

For visitors who wish to spend more time at the Sao Paulo Museum de Arte Contemporanea, there is a library, gift shop, and café where you may rest after your visit. The museum is open from Tuesday through Friday, 10am to 6pm, and on Saturdays/ Sundays and holidays from 10am until 4pm. For further information, the telephone number for the MAC is (11)3091-3039. The driving address of the museum is also Rua de Reitora, 160 at the Cicade Universitaria.
