Royal Treasures at the Sao Paulo Museum Fundacao Maria Luisa e Oscar Americano

The Sao Paulo Museum Fundacao Maria Luisa e Oscar Americano is located in the Sao Paulo neighborhood of Morumbi, in front of the official historical palace of the Bandierantes from their period of occupation in the earliest days of Sao Paulo’s formation in Brazil. The foundation for Maria Luisa and Oscar Americano was created in 1974 for the socialite and engineer Oscar Americano, and stands now with its own place in Sao Paulo’s cultural history.

The museum itself is a private estate, located in a wooded part of the city, and is the headquarters not only for the Sao Paulo Museum Fundacao Maria Luisa e Oscar Americano, but also for the foundation itself. Oscar Americano began the foundation after the death of his wife, and he donated his own private collection of art to the city of Sao Paulo – including the 75,000 square meter park which he owned nearby.

The Foundation for Maria Luisa and Oscar Americano works toward better preservation of the environment and well as collecting treasures and works of art that explain the history of Brazil from its royal era. There are plenty of art and history classes taught here, and on Sundays visitors may enjoy concerts in the building’s auditorium. A separate tearoom is also a lovely place to sit and discuss the surroundings.

The Sao Paulo Museum Fundacao Maria Luisa e Oscar Americano is proud to present visitors to the museum a glimpse of Sao Paulo’s history in progression, with a focus on the royal family of Brazil and their role in the establishment of the country and state. The house itself is the museum, and there are many things from 17th century paintings to 18th century furniture, including silver, porcelain dishes, woven tapestries, and religious art and artifacts. Engravings and personal sculptures of the Brazilian royal family compliment the surroundings, and in total there are some 1500 items from the imperial and colonial periods of Brazilian history.

Since the Sao Paulo Museum Fundacao Maria Luisa e Oscar Americano is set in a quiet and private wooded area, visitors would be best to take a taxi here, as it is not typically serviced by public bus or transit. The address is Avenida Morumbi 4077, and the phone number for additional information is (11)3742-0077. Hours for the museum are Tuesday through Friday from 11am until 5pm, with weekend hours from 10am until 5pm. Visit the gift shop while you’re there, and help support the important cultural work of the Foundation!
