A Rainbow of Colorful Diversity at the Sao Paulo Parada do Orgulho

The Sao Paulo Parada do Orgulho is a celebration of Gay Pride that takes place annually in Sao Paulo. Beginning in 1997, the parade draws an enormous crowd of participants and spectators as it heads down Paulista Avenue. Not only is the parade something that draws large crowds, but the unofficial ‘Month of Pride’ that the parade is scheduled in has plenty of activities and speakers that come into the city to help educate the public on tolerance and diversity.

The parade and surrounding events are run by the APOGLBT, a private civil group that organizes Gay Pride celebrations within the city. For the first year of the Sao Paulo Parada do Orgulho, there were approximately 35,000 participants and spectators as the event tried to get off the ground. As the parade grew, the organization grew, and in 2002 there were over 500,000 people involved in the organization. By 2004, the GLBT Parade was the largest in the world – according to the Military Police of Sao Paulo records, over 1.5 million people attended that year.

During that same year, the Gay Rights organization tried to get the state to move toward the rights for gays and lesbians to marry, as well as move toward ending discrimination and homophobia. Each year, the parade is tacked with a new theme, and the theme for 2004 was “Our Pride and Family Pride.” The parade in 2005 saw a larger jump in the amount of people, with around 1.8 million people in the city for the parade and other festivities. The theme was “Civil Partnership Now: Equal Rights, Not More Not Less”, and the Avenida Paulista was packed – but 2006’s event would see even more attendance!

In 2006, the Sao Paulo Parada do Orgulho actually made it into the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest Gay Pride celebration in the entire world, as there were 2.5 million participants from across the globe who came to be a part of the events. The parade focused on “Homophobia is a Crime! Sexual Rights are Human Rights”. In 2007, estimates were as high as 3.5 million people, however the Military Police didn’t release the official statistics, since they claimed it would be impossible to count the number of people at an event with a ‘floating population’. That tells you that there were certainly a whole lot of people… especially when the official capacity of Avenida Paulista is only one million! The theme for 2007 was “A World Without Racism, Machismo and Homophobia”.

Regardless of your background or orientation, the Sao Paulo Parada do Orgulho is open to all people – everyone is invited to attend the parade, take in the celebrations, and just enjoy life for a day! It’s a time when the people of Sao Paulo break free of their confines and simply celebrate what it means to live life to its fullest – and that’s definitely a party that you don’t want to miss.
