See Worldwide Creatures at the Sao Paulo Zoologico Park!
The Sao Paulo Zoologico Park was officially opened to the public in March 1958, created for the main purposes of helping to preserve animals of all varieties for educational and recreational use by biological researchers and the general public. The Sao Paulo Zoological Gardens Foundation worked hard to maintain the zoo and its attractions, and because of its newfound role in Brazilian conservation efforts, the Sao Paulo Zoologico Park became the first organization in Brazil to participate in multiple programs devoted to the recovery and preservation of Brazil’s many endangered species.
The zoological park in Sao Paulo takes up approximately 900,000 square meters of space, most of it set inside the Atlantic Rain Forest. The population of the Sao Paulo Zoologico Park is thus over 3,200 registered animals – that means that there are over 200 bird species, 100 mammal different mammal species, and around 100 other species of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates! And if that isn’t enough, the zoo is one of the only places to see some very rare creatures, such as the white rhino, the lion marmoset, the Lear’s macaw, the Spix’s macaw.
One of the lifelines of the Sao Paulo Zoologico Park is its connection to the Ipiranga river’s starting point, which contains surrounding lakes that attract thousands of both native, migratory, and exotic birds. The teeming plant life also allows freshwater fish and reptiles to make their homes in a more natural environment than a man-made structure, such as those found in other zoos.
The Sao Paulo Zoologico Park employs over 70 zookeepers to assist in taking care of all the animals, as well as 12 biologists devoted to research and conservation, and there are always at least 6 veterinarians on staff at all times. Each section of the zoo – also called ‘departments’ – has its own house that contains offices for those running the departments, as well as medical facilities specifically tailored to each department’s animals.
One truly unique aspect of the Sao Paulo Zoologico Park is its ‘Zoo Safari’ feature, which takes visitors on a drive through natural habitats of animals so that they can be observed in as natural an environment as possible. It is over 4 kilometers long, and families will see all sorts of creatures from llamas, to tigers, to deer and even lions! When you’re done there, take a quick trip to the zoo’s lake area, where the monkeys live in their own little monkey houses on small islands right in the park’s lake!
