Dance the Night Away at Skol Beats
Sao Paulo Music Festival
Every year, the Skol Beats Sao Paulo music festival draws in tens of thousands of people over the course of two days – they come to dance, to drink, and to listen to some of the most famous names in electronic music as they scratch live at the Interlagos Autodrome or, more recently, the Sambodromo of Anhembi. Held in May or June, this is one of the most anticipated musical events of the year, and is generally geared for the college-aged crowd.
The first edition of Skol Beats Sao Paulo was held in 2000, sponsored by Skol beer. It was the first electronic music festival in Brazil, and for a first-time event, the total number of people was nearly record breaking – twenty thousand people showed up over 2 days. The next year, since the first festival had been such a success, there were actually 2 more Skol Beats festivals held in Curitiba and Rio de Janiero! But as the original site of the festival, Sao Paulo’s attendance literally doubled, with 40,000 participants in the event’s second year.
Two days before the festival began in 2002, each and every ticket was sold out – the maximum capacity of the venue was 40,000 people, which meant that some who wanted to attend the festival were unable to come. In order to accommodate the size, the 2003 edition had to be moved to the Sambodromo of Anhembi, where 44,000 people could dance and drink to electronic beats.
The Skol Beats Sao Paulo festival sold out quickly in 2004, with 50,000 people attending – and in 2005, the event was the largest it had ever been, with around 55,000 tickets sold and huge sponsorship. Just when the city thought it couldn’t get any bigger, 2006 had 59,000 attendees with hundreds of merchandisers, food venues, and public facilities. Although the attendance in 2007 dropped, organizers chalked it up to a new organizational system that may take some getting used to – but that certainly won’t slow down the party!
If you’re planning on heading down to Skol Beats Sao Paulo, there’s one rule: buy your tickets early! And then get ready to party with over 1 million watts of sound and a whole lot of dancing at the largest electronic music festival in the world. There are multiple stages, food areas, almost 20 bars and enough bathrooms to go around, and now with a new addition of the Urban Land tent beats that brings in the biggest names in black electronica music for the event. Grab your dancing shoes and join the fun!
