Move Your Body – Get Into
Sao Paulo Sports
If you’re visiting Sao Paulo, you don’t want to miss out on Sao Paulo sports! Like everywhere else in Brazil, soccer or football is the most important sport in the entire city, and the locals take their football matches very seriously. There are three professional league teams in the city: Corinthians, Sao Paulo FC, and Palmeiras; all three teams play in the Brazilians Series A division. Sao Paulo’s Series B team is Portuguesa, and there are two other much smaller clubs, Nacional and Juventus.
Each team has its own stadium, so you’ll need to determine which team you’d like to see play before heading out to buy tickets. One place you could try to get tickets is online, at a site such as Coast to Coast tickets, though you might be able to get a better price from your travel agent in a package deal. Either way, you’ll need to buy early – football tickets sell out very, very quickly, and sometimes months before the scheduled match.
The Corrida de Sao Silvestre is also held every year on New Year’s Eve, and it is a race of 15km along the streets of Sao Paulo. This Sao Paulo sports event can draw up to 15,000 competitors, and is not limited to native Brazilians – so if you’re a visitor who also enjoys running marathons, this might be a great experience to take part in!
Other popular Sao Paulo sports are tennis, basketball and volleyball, and there are some private clubs where official city teams will practice for competitions. Some of these are the Esporte Clube Pinhieros and the Sao Paulo Athletic Club, where the Sao Paulo rugby team practices. Tickets for these events can be a little more difficult to obtain, and in many cases it is best to just show up to the stadium or building where the match is being held, and purchase your ticket from the box office there.
Dance of all kinds is another very popular form of Sao Paulo sports, and there are hundreds of dance studios across the city that teach hundreds of different kinds of dance! Many also have weekly drop-in lessons, so visitors to the area can pay a flat fee and attend a beginner’s instructional class for a few weeks while visiting Sao Paulo. Places such as the Nucleo de Danca Stella Aguiar or Tahira Nawaar studio run workshops for samba, belly dancing, or even flamenco! You’ll stay active, and maybe be able to show off some of your new moves at one of the Sao Paulo nightclubs during your stay!
